The Homecoming Parade

Homecoming parade is an event held every fall by many high schools and colleges, especially in small towns. It is week long celebration with parties, dances, and dinners for the old graduates (alumni), as well as for the new students and their friend and parents. One of the outstanding events is the crowning of the homecoming queen, who is chosen by the students of the school. The queen opens the sports event – usually a homecoming football game.

جشن بازگشت به محل تحصیل!!

این جشن هر سال، در آغاز فصل پاییز در بسیاری از دبیرستان ها و دانشگاه ها به خصوص در شهرهای کوچک تر برگزار میشود. این جشن شامل چندین مهمانی، رقص و دعوت به شما برای فارغ التحصیلان و همین طور دانش آموزان جدید الورود به همراه والدین و دوستانشان میباشد. بخشی از این مراسم تاجگذاری ملکه میباشد که توسط دانش آموزان هر مدرسه یا دانشگاه انتخاب میشود. وی مسابقات ورزشی – که معمولا با فوتبال آغاز میشود- را افتتاح میکند.

Sending Greeting Cards

The custom of sending greeting cards to friends and relatives for special occasions originated in England, where the practice was limited to people who could afford to pay private messengers to carry their greetings across great distances. With the advent of a British law that established inexpensive mail delivery, a market for sending greeting cards for birthdays, anniversaries – almost in any occasion imaginable- opened up overnight. In America the card market was expanded by the founder of Hallmark Cards.

سنت ارسال کارت تبریک برای دوستان و خویشاوندان در ایام خاص در انگلیس ابداع شد، جایی که این کار مخصوص کسانی بود که قادر به پرداخت هزینه پیک های خصوصی جهت فرستادن کارت تبریک ها به مقاصد دوردست بودند. با اجرای قانونی جدید در بریتانیا مبنی بر ارسال ارزان قیمت نامه ها، رقابتی برای فرستادن کار ت های تبریک تولد و کلیه مراسمی که هر ساله برگزار میشدند – تقریبا هر موقعیتی که قابل تصور باشد- به صورت طرح شبانه آغاز شد. در آمریکا بازار ارسال این گونه کارت ها توسط موسس شرکت "هال مارک کاردز" گسترش یافت.
 

Give me a high five!

The slapping of the raised right hand with the open palm of another person's right hand is a pervasive gesture in American culture that indicates enthusiastic approval and acceptance of a deed or incident. This gesture may have sprung from the old Roman gesture of raising the right arm in praise or tribute to the emperor.

بزن قدش!

بالابردن و زدن کف دست راست به یکدیگر حرکتی فراگیر است که در فرهنگ آمریکا نشانگر موافقت با آنچه که رخ داده میباشد. این عمل احتمالا از عمل بالا بردن دست راست به عنوان ستایش و تکریم امپراطور در رم باستان سرچشمه گرفته است.

THE BIRTHDAY CAKE AND CANDLES

With each birthday, Americans not only celebrate growth but also the passing of another year. Thus, candles are symbols of both life and death, as well as both hope and fear. When a person makes a wish over these symbols, s/he invokes powers for good future and when that person snuffs out these symbols, s/he expresses the hope to have a degree of control over whether lies in store for him or her.

کیک و شمع جشن تولد

آمریکایی ها با هر جشن تولدی نه تنها بزرگ شدن بلکه گذر یک سال به خوبی و خوشی را نیز جشن می گیرند. بنابراین، شمع هم نماد زندگی و هم نماد مرگ است همان طور که نماد امیدواری و ترس است. وقتی که یک نفر در کنار این نمادها آرزویی می کند، آینده خوبی را برای خود طلب می کند و وقتی که شمع ها را خاموش می کند، دعا می کند که خود را در برابر دروغ هایی که می تواند بگوید کنترل کند.

Example conversation:

A: Happy birthday! Now close your eyes make a wish and blow out the candles.

 (The birthday girl blows out all of the candles at once.)

A: Hooray for you! You blew them all out in one breath. That mean’s you’ll get your wish for sure.

B: But dad, you said that you wouldn’t allow me to have a chimpanzee as a pet around the house.

A: Oops!

پدر: تولدت مبارک! حالا چشماتو ببند یه آرزو کن و شمع ها رو فوت کن.

(دختری که جشن تولدش است همه شمع ها را با یک فوت خاموش می کند.)

پدر: آفرین به تو! تو همه شمع ها رو با یه فوت خاموش کردی. این یعنی تو حتما به آرزوت می رسی.

دختر: اما بابایی، تو به من گفتی که به من اجازه نمی دی یه شامپانزه رو توی خونه نگه دارم.

پدر: وای نه!

BLUE IS FOR BOYS, PINK IS FOR GIRLS

   Since all babies look alike, boys are usually dressed in blue and girls in pink simply to identify the gender. In ancient times, girl babies were regarded as inferior to boy babies, so the color blue which was believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits was reserved exclusively for the boys. The color pink was introduced for the baby girls in accordance with a legendary European tradition that suggested girls were born inside a pink rose.

PASSING OUT CIGARS

In primitive ceremonies on individual blessed with the arrival of a baby shared his fortune with the community, to avoid the envy of both his fellows and the gods. The smoke of a proud papa’s pipe drifting toward the heavens was a sort of appeasement to the heavenly powers. Today’s father’s distribution of cigars to celebrate the arrival of a baby may be regarded as a modern variant of this ritual.

BAPTISM

From ancient times water served the dual purpose of purifying and protecting both mother and child from evil spirits. The Christian notion is that the water washes away original sin. Thus, in Christian baptismal ceremony the child is either immersed in the baptismal basin (as in the Greek orthodox ceremony). The Christian baptism also includes the naming of the child, since during the baptismal rite the child is reborn into Christ.

آیین غسل تمعید و نامگذاری

از زمان های دور آب برای دو هدف پاک کردن و محافظت کردن از مادر و نوزاد از روح های خبیث استفاده میشده است. اندیشه مسیحی بر این پایه استوار است که آب گناه حضرت آدم را از نوزاد میشوید. بنابراین، در جشن غسل تمعید مسیحیان نوزاد در حوض غسل تمعید فرو برده میشود (نظیر جشن ارتدکس در یونان). مراسم غسل تمعید مسیحیان هم چنین شامل نامگذاری نوزاد نیز میشود زیرا حین تشریفات مذهبی مسیحیان نوزاد در نزد مسیح تولدی تازه می یابد!!!
