Curing Cramps

Superstition says that one way to stop the pain of a cramp is by carrying certain animal bones on your body. Another cure is to lay your shoes on your stomach, across the cramp!

حرف اول و آخر نام تمامی قاره ها در زبان انگلیسی یکسان است.  

Passive:

جملات از لحاظ معلوم بودن فاعلشان به دو دسته تقسیم می شوند، معلوم و مجهول. اگر جمله ای که استفاده میکنیم معلوم باشد، در واقع داریم عمل فاعل را بیان میکنیم (عمل خاصی توسط فاعل مشخصی انجام شده و ما بر فاعل آن عمل تاکید داریم) در حالی که اگر جمله مجهول باشد، آنچه که اتفاق افتاده را بیان کرده ایم (عمل خاصی توسط فاعل مشخصی انجام شده ولی فاعل آن چندان مهم نیست و ما بر عمل انجام شده تاکید داریم).

-       My grandfather was a builder. He built this house in 1935.

-       This house is quite old. It was built in 1935.

اگر به دو مثال بالا خوب دقت کنید متوجه خواهید شد که در جمله اول تاکید گوینده بر این است که این خانه توسط پدربزرگ من ساخته شده و در واقع در مورد پدربزرگش صحبت میکند اما در مثال دوم گوینده هیچ اشاره ای به سازنده خانه ندارد و فقط در مورد خود خانه صحبت میکند.

نکته: اگر بخواهیم فاعل جمله را در جملات مجهول بیان کنیم از ساختار by+ subject استفاده میکنیم:

-       This house was built by my grandfather.

حال که با تفاوت جملات معلوم و مجهول و کاربرد جملات مجهول آشنا شدیم...

Tongue-Twister:

A tongue-twister is a phrase which is very difficult to pronounce.  Repeat these sentences 3 times as quick as you can:

1.       rubber baby buggy bumper

2.       Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper.

3.       She sells seashells on the sea shore.

Be/get used to (doing) sth:

این عبارات را هنگامی به کار میبریم که می خواهیم بگوییم عادتی که داریم برایمان عجیب نیست یا نبوده.

Lisa is American, but she lives in Britain. When she first drove a car in Britain, she found it very difficult because she had to drive on the left, not on the right. Driving on the left was difficult and strange for her because:

She wasn’t used to it.

She wasn’t used to driving on the left.

But after a lot of practice, driving on the left became less strange. So:

She got used to driving on the left.

Now it’s no problem for Lisa:

She is used to driving on the left.

همان طور که در داستان و مثال های بالا مشاهده می کنید بین عبارات داده شده تفاوت های معنایی موجود است:

-          عبارت was used to (doing) sth هنگامی کاربرد دارد که می خواهیم در مورد عادتی که از گذشته بوده (و هنوز هم وجود دارد) صحبت کنیم.

-          I bought some new shoes. They felt a bit strange at first because I wasn’t used to (wearing) them.

-          عبارت get used to (doing) sth به این معناست که انجام کاری به تازگی برایمان به عادت تبدیل شده و دیگر انجام آن کار برایمان عجیب (یا خلاف عادت) به نظر نمی رسد.

-          Our new flat is on a very busy street. I expect we’ll get used to the noise, but at the moment it’s very disturbing.

-           عبارت be used to (doing) sth نیز به این معناست که کاری از گذشته برایمان به صورت عادت بوده و هنوز هم آنرا انجام میدهیم و انجام آن به هیچ وجه برایمان عجیب نیست (تازه به آن عادت نکرده ایم بلکه مئت هاست به آن عادت داریم).

-          Barbara’s husband is often away from home. She doesn’t mind this. She is used to him being away.
